Why OPSM optometrist Joon is running Round the Bays 2026 for Glaucoma NZ
If you’ve been looking for a challenge that feels achievable, this is one you can say yes to.
Joon didn’t sign up for Round the Bays to chase a time. He signed up because running has supported his health, and because it’s become something he and his wife do together. He’s also using the day to start more conversations about glaucoma, a condition he sees affecting lives far too often.
“Recently, my wife began running together with me. As we were looking for a running event that would be more approachable than a half or full marathon, we came across this particular event.”
“8.4km in length seemed more than reasonable for my wife to start on her running journey.”
If you’ve ever thought you need to be a “real runner” to enter an event, let this be your permission slip. You can walk, jog, run, or mix it up. You set the pace. You still finish.
For Joon, this run has a bigger purpose.
Why Joon can’t ignore glaucoma
“As an optometrist, I see first-hand how profoundly glaucoma can affect people’s lives, often without them realising it until it is too late.”
“Many of the patients I care for felt perfectly well before their diagnosis. A lot of the times, it’s due to the simple fact that they’ve never heard of glaucoma before.”
Glaucoma often affects peripheral vision first, which means you might not notice changes yourself.
“Unlike conditions that affect central vision, such as cataracts or macular degeneration, glaucoma usually affects peripheral vision first. This makes it extremely difficult for individuals to notice any changes on their own.”
That’s why Joon’s focus is early detection.
“For this reason, I would like everyone to understand the importance of early detection and regular eye examinations.”
What to do now, even if you don’t run
“I would like to strongly advise everyone to undergo regular eye examinations, particularly if you have a family history of glaucoma.”
“New Zealand is fortunate to have highly skilled optometrists readily accessible throughout the country. I urge everyone to take full advantage of this valuable healthcare resource.”
If you or someone you know is due for an eye examination, get one booked with your local optometrist today.
If the Southern Cross Round the Bays feels doable for you, it can also be a practical way for you to support glaucoma awareness.
