Last year I was diagnosed with glaucoma. The possibility had been lingering in the background for many years, so when the diagnosis finally came, I knew it was time to become informed and better understand what lay ahead.
I learned that Glaucoma NZ was holding a series of information meetings, and while visiting Wellington, I was able to attend one of the sessions. It was an incredibly worthwhile experience for me. The environment was welcoming, informative, and supportive. The presentations were engaging and easy to understand, with a balance of clinical insight and practical, real-world advice. I learned about developments in glaucoma care, as well as helpful strategies for managing some of the day-to-day challenges that come with the condition.
Through the Wellington event, I was also introduced to the SiGHTWiSE programme. Not long afterwards, I received a phone call from the amazing Lisa, the Clinical Educator who manages the support programme. I was genuinely surprised and deeply grateful. Here was someone knowledgeable and caring taking the time to ask whether I had any concerns or questions she might be able to help with.
Having someone informed to talk to outside of medical appointments has been an enormous support. I’ve been able to ask about both the technical and practical aspects of glaucoma, along with those questions you sometimes worry might sound silly. But nothing ever felt silly. The support was centred around what I needed, and that has meant a great deal to me.
This year, I was delighted to hear there would be a free patient symposium held in a nearby rural town. Even better, the local optometrist I attend was one of the presenters. Once again, it proved to be a very worthwhile event. The smaller setting created an opportunity for more direct contact with the presenters and a more personal learning experience.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making these events possible. The support, education, and sense of connection they provide truly make a difference.
Thank you Denise for sharing your story.
