“I feel very fortunate”: Dawn’s care under a glaucoma prescribing optometrist

Dawn regularly sees a glaucoma prescribing optometrist for her ongoing glaucoma care, rather than travelling to hospital for routine check-ups.

“It’s been fantastic,” she says.

Now 87, Dawn has lived with glaucoma for more than 20 years. She knows regular eye checks are an important part of protecting her sight, which is why she’s always made eye health a priority, not only for herself but for her family too.

A familiar face every six months

What she values most is the continuity of her care.

Every six months, she meets with her glaucoma prescribing optometrist to review how her glaucoma is tracking. Looking back at photographs from previous visits helps her understand how her eyes are being monitored over time.

“I have a personalised review of my examinations, including photographs.”

Care that keeps watch over time

For Dawn, it’s reassuring to know someone knows her history and is keeping a close eye on her glaucoma.

Just as importantly, she knows support is there if she ever has concerns.

“If I have any concerns, I’m able to visit and receive advice,” she says.

Working together when more care is needed

That ongoing relationship became especially important when changes to another eye condition were detected during one of her appointments.

Her glaucoma prescribing optometrist arranged an urgent referral back to hospital and, within two weeks, she had begun treatment.

Knowing her eye care team works together gives Dawn confidence that she’s receiving the right care at the right time.

Today, she continues to attend regular appointments and use her prescribed eye drops to help keep her glaucoma stable.

“I feel very fortunate”

Looking back, it’s not just the appointments she values. It’s the confidence that comes from feeling known, supported and carefully cared for over time.

“I consider myself very fortunate to have this care and consideration.”

Her advice to others is simple: don’t skip your regular eye examinations. It’s a message she’s shared with her family for years, and one she hopes others will take to heart.
